David Croix is no stranger to winemaking in Beaune. A Loire Valley native, David left the north to study oenology in Dijon. Upon completing his studies at the young age of 24, he began working for beloved négociant Camille Giroud, where he ended up holding the winemaker position from 2002 to 2016. While at Giroud, David had the formative opportunity to work with a variety of regional to grand cru appellations, with a specific emphasis on vineyard sites in and around Beaune.
In 2005, David—along with a handful of investors—purchased the nearby Domaine Duchet and founded Domaine des Croix. Strategically, much of the property’s vineyards were located around Beaune, which perfectly fit with David’s numerous years of experience at Giroud. Today, David farms a total of just over six hectares of vines in the Côte de Beaune. All cultivation has been done organically since 2008, though the domaine is not certified. In the cellar, fruit is destemmed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in barrels (up to 40% new). All wines are bottled without fining or filtration.
While all of David’s wines shine in their own right (including his impressive grand cru bottlings from Corton), it’s his pioneering work in Beaune that has long captured our attention. These frequently overlooked—and highly underrated vineyards—are the backbone to some of Domaine des Croix’s most captivating wines, and as prices for Burgundy continue to increase, have become even more attractive in recent years.
