Domaine Blanc Christophe

Domaine Blanc Christophe is a small 4 hectare estate situated in the Northern Rhône.  The production is evenly divided between red and white wines, from Viognier and Syrah. Winemaker Christophe Blanc was trained as a civil engineer,  and although a Burgundian by birth, did not have any family connection to the world of wine. Christophe’s wife, however, preferred to live closer to her parents, and thus, in 2009 , the couple moved south into the Rhône valley and started up their Domaine.

The Domaine follows the precepts of lutte raisonée,and avoids all chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. The viognier, which comes from vineyards in Condrieu and in Saint-Michel-sur-Rhône, is  staked and trellised and yields a mere 20hL/ha. It is manually harvested in 20kg crates and directly pressed, then fermented over indigenous yeasts at low temperature in barrel. Aged 13 months in French oak (20% new), with weekly batonnage during the first trimester, it is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The syrah, which likewise derives from vines grown in granitic, sandy soils in Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf and Chavanay, is also staked and trellised, with low yields of 30hL/ha. The grapes are 75% destemmed and fermented over indigenous yeasts for 3 weeks, with pigeage and remontage. The new wines are aged in French oak (20% new) for 13 months, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
